Whether you like to fish from the beautiful sea shore or out in the deep blue sea, we will help you select the best sea fishing rod to ensure you have the best chance at catching fish.

As you are probably already aware, using a freshwater fishing rod will not work when you're fishing in the sea. The poles are simply not designed for the salt water and not to mention the weight of the fish! Therefore, selecting the correct sea fishing rod is critical to both your enjoyment of the sport of fishing and your ultimate success at fishing. Before you purchase a sea fishing rod you need to be able to answer these 3 questions:

1. Will you be fishing from shore or sea?

2. What type of fish do you intend to catch?

3. What fishing technique will you use?

Believe it or not, these three simple questions will help you narrow your search for the perfect deep sea fishing rod and will help you determine: how to decide what material the rod is made from, how much weight the rod can support and what length the rod should be. The material (fiberglass or graphite) will determine how you fight the fish, fiberglass is more flexible, and how much weight the rod can withstand, which in turn determines the type of fish you can catch. If you are after marlin or sea bass, you will need a heavier sea fishing rod, than if you're after grouper or flounder. Lastly, knowing what technique and tackle you plan to use will impact you rod selection. So think about if you plan on bottom fishing, fly fishing, trolling, etc…. With the proper sea fishing rod selection you will ensure that you don't lose the big one, but can still feel the slightly smaller ones on the line!

Spinning Fishing Rods

If you like a fast acting rod for casting and pitching lures or live bait, then a spinning rod is probably the choice for you. You can find spinning sea fishing rods for both surf fishing and sea boat fishing, we consider spinning rods to be the multi-purpose fishing rod. Spinning rods range from 1.5 to 3.7 meters in length (5 to 12 feet) and are typically made of graphite or fiberglass. They are designed such that the reel sits underneath the rod as do the eye guides which are tapered from the reel to the tip of the rod.  The weight distribution of this design allows for more comfortable fishing over expended periods of time. The larger rods that are made for casting longer distances, therefore the grips are elongated to accommodate two handed casting, whereas the shorter rods are made to provide more fish fighting power with less focus on casting.

Boat Fishing Rods

Boat fishing rods are a broad category that depends on the type of fishing you like to do. If you’re planning on staying stationary then you might consider a spinning rod for casting or bottom fishing. However, if you’re planning on trolling, they you want a real boat fishing rod! Saltwater trolling rods are typically short, stiff rods, which makes catching the fish and reeling it in a fairly trivial task. If you’re fishing more for the sport, you might consider a slightly longer rod that has a little more action than the typical trolling rod. Just make sure that it can support the weight of the fish you plan on trying to catch. A good boat rod has a strong mid and grip section to help you fight larger fish. Some will have a modified butt to sit in a rod holder instead of in your hands, which it typically for trolling in the sea.

Surf Fishing Rods

What if you still like the sea but you don’t have a boat or maybe prefer a little more sport in your sea fishing? Then surf fishing might be for you. You can fish from the shore, rock ledge or other shore feature. Usually the longest of the fishing rods, surf fishing rods can range from 3 to 4.3 meters (10 to 14 feet) in length! Almost all surf rods are designed with two handed casting in mind, which with the right lures or bait, enables you to cast around 100 meters, yet have the control to reach that perfect spot just beyond the breaking surf where the fish like to sit. Of course if you’re bottom fishing, you will need a rod that is strong to support the heavy sinkers and tackle required to get your rig to the bottom.

While having the right rod will not guarantee that you catch fish, it will certainly help improve your odds of bringing in fish when they are present! There are many brands out there. We recommend that you check out St. Croix rods as those are our favorite brand. Make sure you do you research and try out a rod before purchasing it! Also, do not forget that you need the correct reel to go with your selected rod (e.g. a spinning reel to go with your spinning rod.)
